Iceland's most active volcano erupted Saturday, sending a plume of steam and ash 18,000 feet into the air and spawning 50 small earthquakes, the largest of which measured 3.7 on the Richter Scale, says MSNBC.com.
The volcano, called Grimsvotn, is located in southeastern Iceland, under the Vatnajokull glacier and erupted most recently in 2004. Saturday's eruption is not expected to disrupt air traffic in the way that the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokul volcano did in 2010.
Iceland is one of the world's most volcanically active countries, with eruptions sometimes causing local flooding and other problems, but fatalities are rare. Grimsvotn gave indications in November of 2010 of possibly being on the verge of eruption. Scientists have been closely monitoring the volcano since then.
