Just CGI superimposed upon live video. It isn't a hologram until it is a projected image into his actual hand that he sees looking at his hand, not by looking at a video screen which is the only way he is able to perceive the object in his hand. Still, many a gullible soul will see something else projected in the same way and call it a miracle. They are close to being able to pull off a fake Armageddon Event, or a fake Rapture. "look at all the angels in the sky! Ohmygodohmygodohmygod!"
The reason why it has potential excitement is because of what a Japanese company is trying (one of the first posts I ever made to me blog here):

Japan has really embraced the the determination of creating and thus commanding this technology.
Personally, I can't wait until the the tech reaches the point where you can toss a couple of holograms that'll hover there while you inspect them, or where ships will have hologram control panels.

Of course, one of the most obvious end results would have to be STAR TREK's greatest technological creation, the Holodeck: Holograms held in place with force fields.--jef)
